Buddy Holly appeared, burned like a flare for a year and a half, and disappeared, leaving behind nothing that wasn't heartfelt. Listening to "Peggy Sue," "Well...All Right," "Words of Love," and, especially, "Everyday" (voice, acoustic guitar, bass, celesta, knee-slaps...perfect!), one can't help but marvel at the lyrical openness, the taste, and the restraint of the music. Those are qualities generally learned over time, which, of course, was in short supply for Holly, who died five months into his 22nd year. Buddy Holly isn't generally thought of as a sage, but you can learn a lot from these songs. --Steven Stolder

There are 50 cuts here spread out over 2 CD's and in chronological order ranging from an early recording before he made it big thru all the hits and great songs he had written. This is the most value conscious and comprehensive collection ever. Even the ones you may not have heard of like "Modern Don Juan" which reminds me of Marshall Crenshaw and "Fool's Paradise" which really is quite good are all here in excellent sound with dates, pixs and personnel along with stories of his life. Wanted to give a listen to some buddy Holly music. Checked out this product adn noticed there are 59 reviews (This one is #60). He died in 59......I just bought tickets to the Surf Ballroom show a few minutes ago for the 50th anniversary........

I am not the biggest fan of rock and roll from the 1950's. Even though this is the era that I guess everyone should appricate since Rock was invented during this time, most of the music was just a bit to simplistic and bubble gum for my taste. Yes Elvis is still loved today, but many artist from that time peroid are starting to fade, as radio has pretty much dumped fifites rock and golden oldies from playlist. I guess this review is more of a rememberance about Buddy Holly than a critique of his music. What else could I or anyone else add that already hasn't been said? If I could have given this collection 10 Stars, it would still seem insufficient.
