I always have a little fine steel wool in the pack with this, scrape off a little magnesium into the steel wool and spark it.starts fast
Learned that trick in boy scouts back when I was a pup and wasn't allowed to play with matches,
Burnt down ½ the garage and was the only kid in the neighborhood that wasn't allowed to play with steel wool.

Haven't used it, but shopping around, and found one at wallmart, so I'll save it on shiping. But going to buy the sweedish one too, seems more reliable.

It's Winter in Wisconsin, so I didn't go out in the cold and snow to try it out to make a fire. But I did (carefully in a metal pan) start a small piece of kleenex on fire in our basement so I know it works, and works easily and beautifully. It's one of those items that I bought and will almost definitely never need, yet if I ever do get caught out overnight while doing a hike somewhere, I know I will not be without fire.
